Block paving restoration in Sheffield

Sheffield is a city of hills. It stands on the meeting point of several rivers, the Don, Sheaf, Porter, Rivelin and Loxley among them, and the ground between them rises steeply in every direction, with the edge of the Peak District visible from the western suburbs. For anyone with a block paved drive, that topography is the single biggest fact about the place, because it decides where the water goes.

Block paving here is found mainly in the suburbs rather than the centre: the S10 and S11 villa streets, the inter-war semis of Woodseats and Norton, the post-war estates of the east and south east, and newer building out towards Mosborough in S20 and Chapeltown in S35. Much of it is a few decades old now, which is the stage where cleaning, a re-sanding and sometimes sealing make a visible difference.

Where the water goes decides the damage

On a flat plot, rain soaks in or pools evenly. On a Sheffield gradient it runs across the surface, following the fall of the drive to the lowest point and out through whatever drainage there is. Every storm carries a little of the kiln-dried sand out of the joints with it, and the loss is concentrated in channels and at the foot of the slope.

Once that sand is gone, the blocks lose their lateral support. Edges drift, individual blocks rock, and the open joints catch silt, which is a perfect seed bed. A drive that looks uniformly tired is often really two surfaces: a mostly sound top section, and a failed bottom one.

Stone houses, mature trees and shade

The west of the city has big stone-built houses on generous plots, many with long sweeping drives, set among mature gardens and trees. Sheffield is a heavily wooded city by the standards of large English cities, and the leafy southwestern suburbs in particular have street trees and boundary hedges that shade frontages for much of the year.

Shade is slow to dry. Leaves, catkins and sap land on blocks that stay damp, so algae and moss take hold and the surface darkens in patches. Tannin from fallen leaves leaves its own brown marks that a simple wash does not always lift. Older streets, smaller frontages

Closer in, Sheffield is Victorian terraces and back-to-backs with little or no parking space, and the block paving there tends to be a small front yard or a rear patio rather than a drive. These are shorter jobs. Their trouble is usually shade from the buildings around them and dirt washed in from the road.

On any of them, the order of work is the same. Clean the surface and joints, treat what is growing, repair any sunken sections, refill with sand or a polymeric compound, and decide whether sealing is justified.
